Does The Research Support The Use Of Alternative And Mind/Body Medicine?Used with permission of Healing Power Website
It is estimated that in 1997, 83 million people used some form of alternative medicine. Americans spent approximately $32.7 billion dollars in alternative health services with relaxation therapy being one of the most common treatments chosen. The National Institute of Health has found that there is strong evidence that behavioral medicine should be advocated for the treatment of chronic pain and insomnia. Cancer patients who received behavioral intervention had a significant reduction in pain and psychological distress. In two studies, the patients participating in behavioral interventions had twice the survival time. Dean Ornish' program of diet, mind body therapy, yoga, exercise and group support has been shown to reverse coronary heart disease. The research is consistent. Mind/Body Medicine Works... Patients with chronic pain who practice mind-body relaxation techniques decreased anxiety and depression. They reduced the number of visits made to their physician for treatment by more than one third (39%). Continued practice of Mind-Body techniques lead to even further reductions in the need for medical treatment. Behavioral medicine intervention for chronic pain could save $35,000 every two years per 100 patients. Research is proving that the mind can produce strong and effective healing. Utilization of the Mind-Body connection can help the patient to decrease their symptoms and ultimately gain control over their disease.
