page 4 Name The Bible does not prescribe a specific method or physical posture to be adopted when calling on the Name of God, the Holy Word. It should be recognized, however, that whether this is done audibly, mentally, silently, singing praises, or with eyes open or eyes closed, different effects are produced. The method most conducive to reaching the deepest level of silence is to follow the basic steps outlined for silencing the mind. "peace shield meditation." The Prayer of the Heart, also known today as Centering Prayer, can be traced as far back as the 4th Century when the great Chrysostom writes:
Abide constantly with the Name of the Lord . . . so that the heart swallows the Lord and the Lord, the heart and two become One. Similar teachings continue in the 6th century, in Borsanuphius and in St. John the Ladder who writes: God appears to the mind in the heart.” And “May the memory of God combine with your breathing; then will you understand the use of silence.

Mt:6:9: After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Mk:11:10: Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. Lk:1:49: For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. Lk:2:21: And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. Lk:11:2: And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Lk:13:35: Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Lk:19:38: Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. Jn:1:12: But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Jn:2:23: Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did. Jn:3:18: He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. Jn:5:43: I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. Jn:10:25: Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me. Jn:12:13: Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. Jn:12:28: Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. Jn:14:13: And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. Jn:14:14: If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. Jn:14:26: But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Jn:15:16: Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. Jn:16:23: And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Jn:16:24: Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. Jn:16:26: At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: Jn:17:6: I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. Jn:17:11: And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. Jn:17:12: While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. Jn:17:26: And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them. Jn:20:31: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. Acts:2:21: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts:2:38: Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts:3:16: And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all. Acts:4:12: Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts:4:18: And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. Acts:4:30: By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. Acts:5:28: Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us. Acts:8:12: But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Acts:9:14: And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name. Acts:9:15: But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: Acts:10:43: To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. Acts:10:48: And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. Acts:15:14: Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. Acts:15:17: That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. Acts:15:26: Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Acts:16:18: And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour. Acts:19:5: When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Acts:19:13: Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. Acts:19:17: And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. Acts:21:13: Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. Acts:22:16: And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Rom:9:17: For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. Rom:10:13: For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Rom:15:9: And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.
"They didn't break bread or drink any wine. They heard no sermon, there was no liturgy. But those who gathered in the dimly lit sanctuary communed nonetheless, sharing their faith with each other and their Lord through song and prayer. " That is Taizé prayer (pronounced teh-ZAY).
