RELAXATION RESPONSE By Herbert Benson, M.D * See Also Cinical trial & study done: Use of Meditation--Relaxation Techniques for Management of Stress in a Working Population. (Biomedical journal literature from MEDLINE/PubMed. National Library of Medicine). Dr. Herbert Benson (Relaxation Response) and Dr. Patricia Carrington (CSM ~ Clinically Standardized Meditation) and others. Introduction To Relaxation Response (Relaxation Response: http://www.mbmi.org/pages/mbb_rr1.asp ) Mind/Body Medical Institute President Herbert Benson, M.D. found that there was a counterbalancing mechanism to the fight-or-flight response. Just as stimulating an area of the hypothalamus can cause the stress response, so activating other areas of the brain results in its reduction. The relaxation response is a physical state of deep rest that changes the physical and emotional responses to stress (e.g., decrease in heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension). If practiced regularly, it can have lasting effects when encountering stress throughout the day and can improve health. Elicitation of the relaxation response is at the heart of the M/BMI's research and clinical mind/body programs. Major corporations have instituted Relaxation Response breaks in place of coffee breaks. Now you can learn this simple meditative technique without leaving home, and use it anywhere! * Some people prefer to enter into silence and to experience the fruits without any religious connotations, simply for the physical and health benefits, for relaxation, inner peace, for stress management, or for better decision making and honing their skills for problem solving. The secular methods referenced here are widely used. Whether one uses a secular approach or a spiritual approach, either method can provide significant benefits and help improve the quality of your life. For those who choose to have a more spiritual experience using the same process for quieting the mind, see "Peace Shield Meditation", "Prayer of the Heart" and "Technology for Transformation".
