French Nuclear Tests Brought Ed Winchester to New Zealand

French nuclear tests  in the Pacific Ocean brought former Pentagon official Edward Winchester to New Zealand in support of the New Zealand peace movement's efforts to bring an immediate halt to nuclear tests in the Pacific. This visit was in response to a radio broadcast for support from the New Zealand ship Tui, while it was on duty at Moruroa and Fangataufa atolls.  He was concerned that nuclear testing by the Chinese and French had already ignited fires in Pacific rim volcanoes causing widespread diseases and destruction, and that  further testing had high risk for triggering cataclysms of unprecedented proportions.  The testing threatened to affect the stability and territorial integrity of New Zealand, Australia, the United States, and land masses in the entire Pacific region.

Peacemakers Award to New Zealand Foundation for Peace Studies

The New Zealand Foundation for Peace Studies was recipient of a Peacemakers award on October 30th, 1995 at Auckland, New Zealand.  The Foundation was one of the nominees recommended by the New Zealand Ambassador to the United States. The award was presented formally to Dr. John Hinchcliff, patron of the Foundation, in honoring and recognizing citizens of New Zealand for their commitment, dedication, and struggles to bring peace to a troubled world.

The specific reasons for the award were to recognize and honor efforts by a vast network of peace groups, religious organizations, and concerned citizens of New Zealand to promote the cause of nuclear disarmament, bring a halt to the nuclear arms race and nuclear testing in general, and in particular to halt a series of French nuclear tests at Mururoa Atol in the Pacific.
