THE DIVINE ATTRIBUTES

Allah The Almighty (God) is, in the end, unknowable.  Regardless of how we may try, we are left with an incomplete and partial understanding of Him.  Allahu akbar is the frequent utterance of Muslims.  It means “Allah  (God) is Greater than all that we ascribe to Him.”

Believers may begin to have an inner experience of the presence of Allah  (God) by repeating the word for any one of the ninty-nine of His divine attributes as set forth in the Qur’an. Considered together they emphasize the all-encompassing, all-pervading, all-powerful nature of Allah (God)  .  These attributes are called al-asma’ al husna (The Beautiful Names).

ISLAMIC ZIKR

This prayer practice is the mental repetition of charged words, i.e. names [divine attributes] of God.

Zikr is classified into five categories by Muslim saints from good to best practices.

  1. Zikr done with the tongue called Zikr-i-Lassani and Kalma-e-Shariet or Nasur.
  1. Zikr done with control of breath, called Zikr-i-Qualbi and Kalma-i-Tariquat  or Malqut.
  1. Zikr that leads to the secret of reality, called Zikr-i-Siri and Kalma-i-Halqiqat or Lahut.
  1. Zikr that unlocks the secret door, called Zikr-i-Khaffi and Hahut.
    5.   Zikr done with full attention, called Zikr-i-Ruhi and Kalma-i-Marefat or Jabrut.
